TASK 2
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task

Present a written argument or case to an educated reader with no specialist knowledge of the following topic.

Parents are often over-anxious to teach their children to speak. If children are ‘slow-developers’ parents often allow psychologists and schools to intervene and provide their children speech therapy. Do you think children develop at different rates and so should be left to themselves to acquire language skills, or, is such intervention justified?

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

INTRODUCTION
Speech development is a critical part of early childhood. Most children master basic verbal communication between the age of two to five. This is very important for humans as we are social creatures and need to express ourselves to each other in detail. Some people believe that even slow-developing youth should be allowed to master language without intervention while others ascertain that professional help is warranted. I believe that although children can master language on their own, it is valuable to involve psychologists and schools in this process.

BODY 1
Each child is unique and learns different skills at a different pace. Often, children have different family backgrounds and genetics which play a role in the rate of their speech development whether parents worry or not. In most cases, children who develop speech later than their cohorts, eventually master language just the same. For example, I did not start speaking until after the age of two, so my parents were very anxious. However, as they say, once I had started talking, I never stopped. Therefore, professional speech therapy is not always warranted, but it is definitely a good point to consider.

BODY 2
Specialists have valuable knowledge to help children who have slow language development. Though professional guidance, speech therapy and practice, slow-developing youth can certainly improve faster than if they are simply left to learn on their own. One of my colleague’s daughter had speech therapy for six months, so she not only caught up to her cohorts in verbal skills, but in some ways exceeded them. Clearly, taking her to a speech pathologist was the right decision.

CONCLUSION
Whether kids who struggle with speech acquisition are taken to see specialists or not, most do learn to use effective verbal communication. If parents are worried the rate that their children’s speech is developing, they should take them for professional help in school or to a psychologist. There is no harm in this. After all, these professionals dedicated their learning and career to help those parents and children.

WRITING TASK 2
You should spend no more than 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic:

Some people argue that keeping pets is beneficial for longevity while others believe that household animals are not healthy for people to have as companions.

Discuss both sides of the argument and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

INTRODUCTION
Millions of people keep pets at home for various reasons. Most commonly, people keep pets in their house or apartment, especially dogs and cats, to keep them company. Many people have concerns whether this is an overall positive or negative for human health. Although pets can cause disease due to germs and bacteria, they also extend people’s life through companionship and exercise.

BODY 1
It is a known fact that animals, such as cats and dogs are often carriers of many kinds of bacteria, virus and other pathogens that can harm humans. Animals do not have the same kinds of hygiene practice as humans, they do not wash and shower as people do. Therefore, over time, they collect many pathogens in their fur and mouth which make millions of people sick around the world annually. For instance, one of my good friends got lime disease because of a tic that traveled home on his dog from when his dad went for a hike. However, this is a very unfortunate event and happens rarely.

BODY 2
It is well-know that having pets motivates people to action and keeps them happy. Dog owners agree that having a K9 keeps them fit by encouraging daily walks. Furthermore, social isolation is detrimental to human health, especially for the elderly. Therefore, having a pet around the house can extend an older person’s life by at least several years. My grandfather has a German shepherd, so he goes for at least three walks a day. Since he lives alone, his dog keeps him company, and this has likely helped him reach the ripe age of 89. So, pets can clearly have very positive effects on human life.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, it is debatable whether or not keeping pets in the home is a good idea. In some cases, pets result in disease for the family. However, in most instances having a pet aids in exercise and long-life. In either case, pets are here to stay and many people continue to enjoy their company.

TASK 2
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task

Present a written argument or case to an educated reader with no specialist knowledge of the following topic.

Nowadays animal experiments are widely used to develop new medicines and to test the safety of other products. Some people argue that these experiments should be banned because it is morally wrong to cause animals to suffer, while others are in favour of them because of their benefits to humanity.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience
Write at least 250 words.

INTRODUCTION
Experimentation on living creatures is common practice in today’s scientific community. Thousands of laboratories around the world use animals such as monkeys and rats to test drugs and other products. The reason for this is that human trials are too risky but the benefits can be great. Although there is truth in the unethical aspect of animal testing, I believe the greater good for humanity justifies this need.

BODY 1
Animal rights activists around the world apply pressure on government to ban animal testing. In many cases the research done on animals inflicts great pain and suffering. Often these poor creatures are kept in small cages in closed rooms. They are injected with all types of chemicals and dissected for results. For instance, on research center in the US was dissecting dogs to see what effects a new type of AIDS medication had. The people in the neighborhood complained of hearing terrible noises all day. This type of suffering should not be allowed and goes against ethics. Nevertheless, nowadays there are strict regulations to minimize the suffering of animals in research.

BODY 2
It is proven that animal experimentation results in numerous positives for human health and quality of life. Every year there are dozens of medical breakthroughs coming from science centers which use animals for research. For example, two years ago researchers discovered a new type of insulin while testing on mice, and this wonder drug helped to save my cousins life. Clearly, for this reason alone, I am in the belief that animal testing should be allowed in society.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, there is a hot debate whether or not animal testing is ethically acceptable in society. Although there are good reasons to ban animal research, I do strongly believe that testing on animals is crucial for human survival. In the end, people need to decide if it is okay for humans to suffer instead of animals.
