I’ve noticed I forget new information pretty quickly unless I do something with it. Last week I was learning a bunch of new terms for a course, so instead of just rereading them, I made little associations with things from my everyday life. Somehow that worked much better. What techniques do you guys use when you need to remember something faster?

For me, repeating information out loud helps quite a bit. I also try to explain a new idea in my own words, almost like I’m telling it to someone else. I started doing that when studying for an exam, and I was surprised how much easier it was to recall the material later. I don’t think there’s one method that works for everyone, though.

One thing that helped me was combining several simple techniques instead of relying on one. I usually write down the key points, make associations, and then test myself later without looking at my notes. I once had to memorize a lot of material for work, and short review sessions worked surprisingly well. I also came across this article about Trachtenberg method division at https://memoryos.com/article/all-truth-about-eidetic-memory which reminded me that structured techniques can make information easier to process. I’ve also noticed that taking short breaks makes a difference, especially when studying for several hours. After a break, I often remember things more clearly than when I keep staring at the same notes. I think experimenting a little is probably the best way to find what actually sticks, since different techniques seem to work better for different types of information.
