Is dental cover usually included with expat health insurance?

I’m sorting out health insurance for a move abroad and one thing I can’t quite figure out is dental cover. I don’t need anything major at the moment, but I normally have a couple of check-ups a year and the occasional filling, so I’d rather not assume it’s included and find out later that it isn’t. Do international health insurance plans normally include routine dental treatment, or is that usually a separate add-on?

Dental is often treated separately from the main medical cover, so I wouldn’t assume it’s included just because the policy looks comprehensive. Some plans have dental as an optional benefit, while others include limited routine treatment but have waiting periods or annual limits. I was comparing plans recently and this ExpatInsure guide was useful because it explains that dental and optical treatment can be optional or excluded depending on the insurer. I’d check the actual dental limits and waiting period rather than just looking for the word “dental” in the benefits list.

That clears it up. I was basically treating “international health insurance” as one big package and didn’t realise dental could be handled so differently between plans. I’ll check whether routine cleanings and fillings are actually covered, and whether there’s a separate annual limit, because that probably matters more to me than having expensive dental work covered.
