Hey everyone. I have been watching pottery wheel videos on YouTube for months, and it looks so satisfying, I want to finally try it in person. Problem is I have never touched clay, and I keep reading that centering is extremely hard and most beginners just make a mess. I do not want to waste money on a class where I spend two hours failing. I am also curious whether one session is enough to tell if this hobby is for me. Are there classes around here where a beginner actually gets to use the wheel and walk out with something?

Centering is tricky, but with an instructor next to you it is way less frustrating than the videos make it look. I went from YouTube watcher to my first bowl at Pottery Studio 1, and they are opening a studio with pottery wheel classes in Santa Monica soon, they already have two in LA. Their two-hour class is built for people who have never touched clay, they say most guests are beginners. The instructor helps you center, shows you how to open and pull up the walls, and steps in before things collapse. I walked out with a small bowl, slightly wonky, but mine. It is $90, or $130 if you want to paint it, and they fire it for you. Fair warning, after the first class you will want a wheel at home. Are you thinking one class or regular sessions?
