To get a high score in Task 1 writing of the academic IELTS you need to give an accurate and strong description and analysis for the provided graph(s) or diagram. In this minimum 150-word essay it is easy to keep repeating words and numbers. However, this is not good to achieve a high score. In order to get a great band level on this section of the IELTS, you must use a variety of vocabulary that not only describes but also emphasizes the changes, similarities, and differences in the data.

The following chart shows the number of minutes spent by a European country making phone calls using different types of communication infrastructure over a certain period of years. Describe the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Introduction

This bar chart indicates the number of minutes in millions, from 0 to 18000, spent by people in Finland making phone calls using local, national/international landlines, and mobile from 1995 to 2004, over the course of a decade.

Overview

Immediately, it is noticeable that there is a broad difference in the time spent using these three communication infrastructure in 1995, but this gap greatly narrows by 2004. Also, the general trend of using local, national/international landlines, and mobiles are noticeably different over the course of the given decade.

Analyses

In 1995, local landlines were by far the most common telephone call in Finland at 12K million mins., twice that of international and national landline, while mobile appeared at just under 1K million mins. However, a decade later, this gap had significantly diminished with local landlines used the same at 12K million minutes and international/national lines and mobiles a close second and third with roughly 11 and 10K million mins., respectively. During this period, local landlines increased in popularity, peaking in 2001 at 17K million mins. and then decreasing until 2004. Simultaneously, national and international landline calls increased in duration by about 1K million mins. each consecutive year until 2004. Finally, mobile use increased rapidly, especially from 2001, gaining more than 2K million minutes of use each following annum.

In summary, it is clear that during the turn of the new millennium the usage of these different communication categories for phone call experienced varying degrees of popularity among people in Finland.
