IELTS Task 1 – Language Proficiency – Band 9

Task 1 is an *Expository essay – you need to explain, expose and interpret the information that is given (Do NOT include your personal opinion, and do more than just simply describe what you see!)

There are four basic types of data reported in statistics/charts:

  1. Nominal data (name data)
  2. Ordinal data (1st, 2nd, 3rd…)
  3. Interval data
  4. Ratio data

The chart shows men and women proficient in a foreign language in several countries. Describe the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
You should write at least 150 words.

Introduction (paraphrase of the question with more details using the graph)

This bar chart illustrates the percentage of males and females whom are fluent in a foreign language in six countries, Thailand, Romania, China, Vietnam, Russia, and India. The y-axis indicates the percentages from zero to 70% with intervals of 7%.

Overview (Most observable features) Immediately, it is noticeable that a greater percentage of women speak a foreign language in all countries except for Thailand. As well, India and Romania have the highest total percentage of foreign language speakers.

Analyses (mark your points for comparison)

Looking at the data in greater detail, the biggest gap in foreign language ability between males and females is in Romania where roughly 20% more women speak a second or third language than men. In contrast, 5% more males in Thailand speak another language than women. Furthermore, the highest overall percentage of foreign language speakers are in India with 56% of men and 69% of women being able to speak in multiple languages. Following India and Romania, Vietnam has the third highest percentage of foreign language speakers at just over half of the population for females and over a third for males. In Russia, sightly less percent of men and women speak a foreign language as in Vietnam. Finally, the lowest percentage of foreign language speakers are in China. 

In summary, there is a wide range in the percent of people speaking a foreign language depending on nationality, and women are generally more than men.

    The provided bar chart compares numerous students who are able to speak six different languages in certain countries namely China, Romania, Thailand, India, Russia and Vietnam.
    Overall, it is clear from the chart also females depict the widely fluctuation to all nations and these figures dominate.In addition, the males can less fluctuate compared to females, so this more lower.
    In detail, both Romania and India’s females are near approximately 63% former and 68% latter respectively. Level of English language proficiency is more lower piont is about 27% in Thailand and around 29% in China and as to the Vietnam shows a slightly increase just above 56% which is more higher as opposed to both China and Thailand. There is also a small growth around 43% in Russia.
    In terms of the males, in China this figure demonstrates a little percentage is about 15%. As well, in Romania the males’ skill on average proportion is 42% and India, there is a higher score is 56% than others. Strikingly, remain three nations are Thailand, Russia and Vietnam almost the same percentages which this countries’ men and women acquire less knowledge than others.

    This chart illustrates the percentage of man and woman who speak effectively foreign language in different countries such as China, Romania, Thailand, India, Russia and Vietnam. Immediately, we can perfectly notice the fact that women practice foreign language more than man in these previous countries except Thaïland where the percentage of men profecient in foreign language are higher than the percentage of women.

    By regarding the data on this bar chart, it is observeable that romanian and indian females have the most elevate percentage, around 63% for romanian women and 69% for indian women. Vietnamese women are in third place with a percentage around 56%, following by russian girls with a lower percentage than vietnam, around 43% percent. In China females who speaks fluently foreign language are more than males. In fact, the data shows a percentage of 33 against 16 percent. The unique country where males dominates in foreign language is Thaïlande where the percentage of man is slightly higher than for woman. It’s about around 31% against 27% in ThaÏlande.

    To resume, according to the data provides by the bar chart, women speaks more fluently foreign language than men, with some exceptions as Thaïlande for example.
