What should you do before your speaking exam?

Practice LOTS – get feedback on your practice – learn from your mistakes
Be calm, relax, focus yourself. (don’t let your mind race)
Record your speaking on your phone and listen to it – do this regularly.
Make a list of important strategies to remember before your exam, like reflect the grammar of questions.
Do lots of paraphrasing practice

What should you not do or say, during your speaking exam?

Avoid saying ‘you’ – when students use ‘you’ their quality of speech goes down.
Do not use words like, stuff, things, something – instead always find a better noun or word.
Do not use general ideas only – it is important to sound original and go into details.
Avoid using complex idioms – especially sentences – “Do not throw bricks when you live in a glass house.”
Do NOT go off topic from the question!

If you skip questions, you will lose marks, but not as many as if you give a completely off-topic answer. The reason is that when you skip the question, you save some time to get another question that hopefully you can answer well and show your level.

Examiner Questions:

May I see your identification, please?

Yes, of course, here is my id card that I used for registration a couple of weeks ago, please have a look.

What is your full name?

My full name is Thomas Fredrick Jefferson, please call me Tom for short.

What do you do for fun? (You MUST NOT sound like you are getting answers from an English textbook or some template from an online video.)

For entertainment, I love to browse YouTube for the latest music videos as well as some educational content. Just the other day, I learned how to make an origami panda bear.

PART 1 – Answer – (Why – give a reason – be original) – Example (w/out saying “for example” – original)

Let’s talk about the internet.
How often do you use the internet? (Why do you use the internet?)

I’m usually online at least four to five hours each day, whether for work or for entertainment, I’m constantly browsing the internet. As I had just said, I like to listen to music through YouTube and I’m also a web designer so I’m online to make money Monday through Friday. I was building a new website just yesterday for about ten hours.

***Keep remembering to use quantitative language THROUGHOUT the interview, do not forget it, after the first few questions.

What are some of the sites you visit frequently?

Aside from YouTube, I also visit a lot of social media websites like Facebook and Instagram, to keep up with what my friends are doing. Early this morning, I was browsing my English-speaking friends’ profiles to discover their most recent adventures while also casually preparing for this exam. In this way, I can hit two birds with one stone.

Do you use the internet at school or at work?

I both use the web at the office as well as at my school. While I’m sitting at my desk, I’m logged into my email constantly so that clients can communicate with me at any time, and when I’m at my university campus, I’m always hooked up to the wifi for a variety of study purposes like doing research for my master’s thesis on alternative cryptocurrencies.

Is internet access commonly available in your country?

Interestingly, the internet is widely available in most urban areas of Canada and some rural parts as well. However, there are definitely a lot of remote places in Canada where there is no internet or mobile phone signal unless a person is using a very expensive satellite connection. This is of course because Canada is a massive country and there are simply not enough people living there to make the internet financially viable across the entire nation.

Why do you think people use the internet?

How has the way you use the internet changed today compared to five years ago?

If you could make a website, what would it be?
