IELTS Speaking Part 2 – Band 9 Strategies – Improving Health

Talk about a place near your home for improving a person’s health
What is this place?
Where is this place?
Who are the people that go there most? Why?
How does it help people improve their health?
You will have one to two minutes to talk about this topic.
You will have one minute to prepare what you are going to say.
Your cue card will be on one of five categories:
Place, person, event, object, idea – each of these categories has a specific set of ideas, in a specific order that works to explain information clearly in a structured way to the audience! ***Make sure to learn all of these.
Place – a. location, b. appearance (mental image), c. history, d. attendees, e. activities (major – 30 sec.), f. your opinion (major – 30 sec.). – think about the card within this context and you will do great!
Always quickly think of the tense that is most used/useful for the particular question – Ex. present, present progressive, present perfect – it is a general fact about a place near your home.
Think of 2 – 3 places near your home for health improvement.
The recreation center, Air of Spring Mental Sanatorium, public park, Sunrise Yoga Center, Gym,

Balance Health Center – three-minute walk – gym, yoga, physiotherapy, acupuncture, massage…(by choosing this type of answer here, you avoid repetition and you create a lot of lexical resource and ideas)
Location – along a major road, Washington St. with bus and train stops around the corner
Next to a general hospital
Near the sea with ocean view
Appearance – large four-story sq complex mostly glass bright, blue-red, wheelchair accessible
History – built the last yr. Surat Municipal Corp. private funding
Attendees (mostly) – used by people of all ages, mostly elderly 60 and above and sick – cardiac problems or injured – broken bones.
Activities (connect attendees) – gym, swimming pool – cardio exercise, specialists, Zumba, aerobics, physiotherapy center, massage center – recovering from car accidents
Prepare your first sentence in your one-minute prep time, so you can start *immediately when the examiner asks you to do so.

A fantastic place for improving both mental and physical wellbeing just three blocks from my home is the Balance Health Center which was built by Surat Municipality Corporation just a year ago. Balance Health is located on Washington Street and there are several bus stops as well as a train station in its near vicinity for accessibility. It is just half a block from the General Hospital, so it is an excellent venue for outpatients to use and get better. Behind the complex is Beacon Hill park which provides a nice calm view for the people using the facilities at the center. It is built on a 5000 sq ft. lot, it’s a four-story building made with large windows, so the inside is very spacious and bright. There are a variety of health facilities and services available at Balance Health including physiotherapy, acupuncture, massage therapy, fitness gym, diet, and weight counseling, as well as a swimming pool with hydrotherapy. Individuals of all ages visit this center, as adults do aerobics and weight-lifting, and the elderly get treatments with specialists. The primary intended use of this complex has been for cardiac patients as well as those who have undergone surgery to help them recover as quickly as possible. So most of the people who visit there are either elderly or outpatients. I’m very happy that this establishment is near my home as I also make use of it. I particularly like the integrative approach to health and healing at Balance Health as they emphasize both western and eastern medicine throughout the healing process.
