Hey all. Had a fire in our Lake Stevens house, started in the garage. The house is standing, but smoke got into everything: furniture, clothes, the kids’ toys. We’re staying with family now. I don’t even know where to start with our belongings. Can smoke-damaged stuff be cleaned, or does everything get thrown out? The insurance adjuster is coming next week, and I want to be ready. Our homeowners policy covers contents, but I have no idea how to document everything. The kids keep asking about their stuffed animals.

So sorry you’re going through this, a fire is incredibly overwhelming. A lot more can be saved than you’d think. When my brother had a fire in Marysville, he went with Encore Construction, and I’d look at their pack-out service on encorerestore.com. They inventoried everything room by room, packed it out, and took it to their facility, where clothes, textiles and many hard items were professionally cleaned and deodorized, then stored until the house was rebuilt. Some stuff couldn’t be saved, but that inventory list was gold for the insurance claim. They also did the structural rebuild. Take care of yourselves and the kids first, the rest can be handled step by step.
