How to Master IELTS Speaking and Writing with AI: Real Class Insights
Welcome to another behind-the-scenes look at our live IELTS prep class, where we dive into high-impact Speaking and Writing tips. This session was packed with practical examples, student answers, and AI integration for IELTS success. Whether you’re prepping for Academic or General IELTS, this article breaks down what you need to succeed. Let’s go!
1. Academic vs. General IELTS: What You Need to Know
If you’re an Academic IELTS candidate, focus strictly on Academic materials. They’re slightly more difficult and better reflect the exam. General IELTS candidates can use some Academic content, especially for Task 2 and Reading Section 3, but remember: it’s a one-way street. Academic students should avoid General content.
Pro Tip: Use your student accounts daily. Watch videos, complete practice exams, and always be reviewing.
2. Writing Task 2 Breakdown: AIโs Impact on Society
In this session, we reviewed a Task 2 question:
“Some people believe that artificial intelligence will do more damage than good for society. Others feel that AI is a positive development. Which do you believe and why?”
Key Takeaway: Avoid sitting on the fence. Choose a side and back it up logically. You can’t say it does more good and more harmโpick one!
We built an essay together with strong structure:
- Hook: “Artificial intelligence has taken the world by storm.”
- Thesis: AI is mostly beneficial because it saves time and generates ideas.
- Body Paragraphs:
- AI encourages idea generation (e.g., using ChatGPT to brainstorm IELTS Speaking answers).
- AI saves time (e.g., summarizing research reports faster).
- Conclusion: Restate thesis and add a clear takeaway: tools are only as good as their users.
Editing Tip: Avoid word repetition. Instead of using “interacting” and “interactions” in one sentence, paraphrase with alternatives like “applications” or “use cases.”
3. Speaking Practice: From Band 5 to Band 8
We practiced Part 1 and Part 2 Speaking tasks with multiple students. Here’s what we learned:
Common Mistakes:
- Speaking without structure (thinking aloud).
- Using awkward expressions like “I usually swimming” instead of “I usually swim.”
- Going off-topic in Part 2.
Success Formula:
- Structure your responses: Answer + Explain + Example
- Use transition words: “For example,” “Moreover,” “Although”
- Stick to the question. Don’t drift.
Sample Part 2 Question: Describe your hometown.
Key points to include:
- Name and location
- Size and population
- Activities and landmarks
- A special memory
Model Line: “My hometown is Palembang, Indonesia. With over 2.7 million residents, it’s known for its traditional fish cake, which I ate almost every day as a child.”
Feedback Tip: Record your answers and ask ChatGPT: “Correct my grammar” or “Find missing prepositions.”
4. Boosting Confidence with Strategy
One of our students asked: “How do I stop hesitating during my speaking test?”
Answer: Practice with purpose.
- Use mirrors or record yourself.
- Focus on clear, complete ideas.
- Don’t worry about the examiner. Speak as if you’re telling a story.
Bonus Insight: Many students perform better alone than with a partner. Simulate the test environment to close that gap.
5. Community Questions & Support
Students also shared issues like not receiving Zoom links or feeling lost during live sessions.
